Is Memorial Day a Public Holiday? 

Memorial Day is recognized as a public holiday at the state level, resulting in the closures of state government offices. Some schools and businesses may also shut down in observance of this day.

What Activities Take Place?

Traditionally, the U.S. flag is flown at half-staff from dawn until noon. Numerous people visit cemeteries and memorials, particularly to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice in military service. Many volunteers participate in placing the American flag on each grave in national cemeteries. 

 

Notably, in Mississippi, Memorial Day coincides with Jefferson Davis' Birthday.

 

Over time, Memorial Day has evolved, with fewer individuals dedicating it solely to remembrance. Many opt for picnics, sports events, and family gatherings during the weekend. Culturally, it marks the onset of the summer season for various events. Fashion-wise, wearing white garments, especially shoes, is deemed acceptable from Memorial Day until Labor Day but has declined over the years, with many choosing to wear white throughout the year.
